Ford Leads the Way in Developing Autonomous (Self-Driving) Vehicles

By 2021, Ford will make self-driving cars a thing of the present instead of the future – the future is now! The Ford Smart Mobility mission is to "be a leader in autonomy, connectivity, mobility, customer experience, and analytics." The goal is to create a vehicle that will operate without a steering wheel, gas pedal, or brake pedal within the confines of a pre-determined area and will be utilized as a ride-sharing or ride-hailing experience. This incredible research has Ford poised to produce the highest level of automation by any automaker to date.

Ford has partnered with many companies that can help them reach their goal of fully automated vehicles, contributing to research in the areas of 3-D mapping, radar technology, advanced algorithms, and camera sensors. These incredible advances are putting us closer to autonomous vehicles that will be available to the public. The advantages for drivers are countless, including improved safety thanks to decreased accidents caused by human error, increased convenience, and increased efficiency. Ford is at the forefront of research and development working to bring these exciting vehicles to drivers in the not-to-distant future.

While the presence of autonomous cars on our roadways may still be off in the future, but Ford is hoping to have as many as 90 prototype autonomous vehicles in their test fleet by the end of 2017. They are working hard to bring the world of tomorrow to drivers today.
